5 Bacolod NMs off to Manila
By Jerome S. Galunan, Jr.

FIVE National Masters from Bacolod City left Manila on Sunday to see action in the Philippine Cities Chess Team Championship slated Nov. 4-6 to be held at the Kaban ng Hiyas Auditorium, Mandaluyong City.

The team is composed of NMs Hamed Nouri, Ted Ian Montoyo, Henry Udani, Vicente Lee and Jerry Areque.

The top three winners of the competition will represent the country in the forthcoming Asian Cities Chess Team Championship to be held tentatively on February next year.

Recently, National Youth Active Chess Championships 2003 national finals campaigner Douglas Diego Perez of Antonio L. Jaime Elementary School won over Cedric Manalo of Brgy. Taculing and bagged the 14-Under boys category of the Bacolod Chess Festival held Oct. 18-19 at the Bacolod Arts Center and Bacolod City National High School, Brgy. Taculing, Bacolod City.

On the other hand, Palarong Pambansa bet Ma. Josella Uy of West Negros College earned a total of 6.5 points and was adjudged champion of the Under 14-girls division after ruling over Bagoeño woodpusher Michelle Ann Arroz.

Talisay City bet Francis Panes edged Bacolod City entry Ian Ted Montoyo to bag the Men’s Open crown.

Panes also ousted FIDE Master Sander Severino in a tie-breaker match to gain the top honors.

University of St. La Salle’s Christine Espinosa, on the other hand, defeated National Master Juliet Opeña of La Castellana in the last round and outclassed Cristina Hermosora of West Negros College in their tie-breaker match to grab the Women’s Open division plum.

More than 200 chessers, including seven National Masters, competed in four categories for the Open Men’s and Women’s and Boy’s and Girl’s of the under 14 years old participants tournament.

The top winners of the four categories received cash prizes, trophies and medals.
