Mayor's Cup coaches to meet with NBA officials

COACHES and representatives of teams invited to see action in the 2004 Bacolod Mayor's Cup Negros Basketball Association (NBA) Open Tournament are scheduled to meet today, 5 p.m. with officials of the NBA at the Dodong's Fastbreak of Bascon Hotel.

They are set to discuss details of the forthcoming tournament slated from January 10 to 18 at the West Negros College gym.

Oscar 'Dodong' Bascon, NBA president, said the meeting is primarily intended to discuss with team owners and coaches the format of the competition and the responsibilities of the participating teams.

"We want to finalize this early all the details of the event so that we can be sure nothing will go wrong when the tournament gets going," Bascon added.

Bascon also said they expect at least two teams from Iloilo to see action in the open category tournament, courtesy of Iloilo Basketball League (IBL) president Robert Uy who is concurrently the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) commissioner for Iloilo.

Also expected in the meeting are representatives of school teams led by reigning NOPSSCEA champion West Negros College, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and University of St. La Salle.
Bascon said the NBA plans to look for commercial sponsors to back up the participation of the school teams in the event.

"This way we will ensure that the varsity teams will get support from the business sector and at the same time we will involve the business community in our basketball development efforts," he said.

Expected in the meeting are NBA vice-president Lawyer William Chua and Johnny Ku, secretary Renato Rojo, treasurer Vic Tan, tournament commissioner Renato Bravo, Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP)-Western Visayas regional director Emmanuel Yap and the NBA directors.
