Pyrotechnic factory razed by fire

A PYROTECHNICS factory was gutted by fire Saturday evening in Barangay Tagda, Hinigaran, reports from the Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office said.

Police identified the owner as Noli Juguan, whose factory was gutted by fire around 9:50 p.m., when one of the firecracker's cords ignited.

The fire was contained by personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection. Police said Juguan possessed a business permit.

As this developed, Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras, provincial police director, ordered police chiefs of the different cities and municipalities to continue checking if pyrotechnic factories possessed business permits.

Ponteras also ordered the strict imposition of the rule that factories be confined in isolated areas.

"This is in order to preempt untoward incidents brought about by the manufacture of firecrackers for Christmas and New Year," Ponteras said.

Police records show that there are 27 pyrotechnic manufacturers in Hinigaran, known to be the firecrackers capital in Negros Occidental.

Last year, three teeners died while five others were wounded after a fire razed inside their workplace in Sitio Acacia, Barangay Gargato also in Hinigaran.

The fatalities all suffered third degree burns after they were trapped inside a factory when the fire broke out.

Hinigaran Mayor Carol Guanco said that the incident should serve as a lesson to firecracker manufacturers never to ignore safety measures in their factories. CCD
