Solon to seek probe on sugar smuggling By Roberto L. Bacasong
* Solon says sugar smuggling will eventually kill the sugar industry if this is not addressed soon
VICTORIAS CITY -- Representative Jose Carlos "Kako" Lacson, of the 3rd District, disclosed Friday that he will take up the sugar smuggling problem in the province in the House of Representatives as soon as session resumes.
Lacson said that sugar production is still considered as the "lifeblood" of the province.
The congressman said sugar smuggling will eventually kill the sugar industry if this is not addressed soon. Hard hit would be the sugar workers, he added.
Lacson disclosed that about 80 entry points in the country where smuggling can successfully occur -- particularly if the Bureau of Customs will not conduct strict inspection on foreign and local vessels in the sea ports.
Gov. Joseph Maraņon earlier expressed concerns that Negros will lose millions of pesos if smuggled sugar continues to flood the market next year.
Major sugar federations and the Sugar Regulatory Administration all over the country will monitor the entry of smuggled sugar.
