Party to settle problem, Iggy says By Christine Mae A. Pelayo
PRESIDENTIAL brother-in-law Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo, regional chairman on-leave of ruling party Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), said the party would settle the problem on the nominations of 14 Lakas candidates for city councilors in Bacolod City.
He refused to comment though on the conflict between the nominees of Mayor Luzviminda Valdez and Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella.
Both the mayor and the congressman are with Lakas but Puentevella's two nominees were not included in Valdez's list.
Valdez is also not supporting the congressman in the May 10 polls.
"I don't have any idea because I am on leave in Lakas since January 4," Iggy said, referring to the rift that prompted the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) to earlier rule that if this is the case, the 14 city councilor bets would be deemed independent.
Iggy said, however, that it should be Lakas' top-brass Joey Rufino and Speaker Jose de Venecia who can decide on the matter.
Intaco Rambit, local Comelec registrar, earlier clarified that Comelec has not yet received the official recommendation from Lakas-CMD as to who will be its final and official 12 candidates for city councilor in Bacolod.
Lakas's Arbitration Committee earlier withdrew the nominations of Lawyer Dindo Ramos and Homer Bais as official candidates for Bacolod councilor in the elections.
Ramos and Bais were endorsed by Puentevella.
In a letter of Lawyer Dante Marcelo, Lakas-CMD national headquarters director for legal affairs in Manila, Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos disclosed the 12 official candidates named for the Lakas-CMD's ticket were only village heads Catalino Alisbo, El Cid Familiaran, Raymundo Sapa and Brigid Tan; veteran candidates Al Victor Espino and Jeston Coscolluela; incumbent Councilors Greg Gasataya, Reynold Iledan, Elmer Sy and Ana Marie Palermo; neophytes Elizabeth Catalbas and Sandy Villano.
They are all partymates of Valdez.
However, Puentevella said the Lakas-CMD national headquarters will reverse its decision regarding the nominations because nobody from the national headquarters or any high official of Lakas-CMD knew about Marcelo's decision.
