BIR collection up by 30% in January
By Clara Mae Hortelano

* The BIR national office plans to require the top 1,000 companies in the 43 tax districts nationwide to submit tax documents and pay taxes electronically starting this year

FOR THE month of January this year, the Bureau of Internal Revenue 12's total revenue collection increased by 30 percent compared to the same period in 2003.

The bureau's Monthly Revenue Collection Report disclosed last month's collection reached P258 million, 30 percent higher than the P198 million collection for the same month in the previous year.

Norma Bayoneta, Tax Assistance Unit head, revealed that BIR-Bacolod District contributed almost half of the collection while the rest were from the districts of Dumaguete, Victorias and Binalbagan.

The actual collection, added Bayoneta, exceeded the target goal of P240 million by seven percent.

"The payment of advance payment of value added tax on refined sugar is the reason why we have attained huge collection for January," said Bayoneta.

She further noted that to further increase the bureau's revenue collection, they will intensify the information drive for the full implementation of the Electronic Tax Payment Scheme this year.

Bayoneta said they ordered four revenue districts under their region to conduct massive information dissemination about the ETPS.

The program was promulgated by Revenue Regulations 9-2001 dated Aug. 3, 2001, pursuant to the provisions of Section 244 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997 (Tax Code).

The BIR national office also planned to require the top 1,000 companies in the 43 tax districts nationwide to submit tax documents and pay taxes electronically starting this year.

Through ETPS, taxpayers could also pay their tax obligations through the Internet.
