50 firearms seized, 38 persons nabbed in gun ban drive

THIRTY-eight persons were apprehended and 50 firearms and two fragmentation grenades were confiscated since the Commission on Elections (Comelec) implemented the gun ban last December 15, for the forthcoming local and national elections in May 10.

Of those arrested, 32 were civilians, three were members of the Philippine Army, one village head, a doctor, and some were agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), reports from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office disclosed.

Reports further showed that the two firearms were abandoned in a secluded area in Manapla town.

Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras, police provincial director, revealed that 27 cases have been filed in court.

He added that the gun ban would remain until June.

The suspects arrested were identified as Rene Perez in San Carlos City; Vincent Sanz and Ronil Tanjusay - Escalante City; Roque Adante - Hinigaran town; Private First Class Rimbert Prado, an Army trooper in La Carlota City; Abner Macapatan and Ricardo Sailog, both in Valladolid town; Donald Jareño, Rodrigo Ariguin, Rodrigo Nugra and Gilbert Tablada - Kabankalan City; Reynaldo Maghares, Tito Caigon, Ernie Llanes and Sergio Gustilo - Bago City; Nelson Amolo - Calatrava town; Anecito Gialon and Joebert Juliano - Ilog town; Roberto Birangbirang - Don Salvador Benedicto town; Victor Baylon - Pontevedra town; Joseph Veloso - Manapla; Danilo Villava - Sagay City; Corporal Arnold Alfonso - Private First Class Joseph Elesaga, Cris Rematico, Cyril Somo and Joemarie Cetera, all of Murcia town; Jerry Flores - Moises Padilla town; Noli Diega and Arnil Oirada and Samson Agure - Silay City; Gerardo Titular, Fortunato Obligado - Himamaylan City; Carmeolo Florete and Rogelio Laurita - Binalbagan; Jaypee Samson - Pulupandan; Jose Ilagan - Sipalay City; and Rolando Sumodio - Hinigaran town.
