PPA collections down by 11 percent By CLara Mae Hortelano
* Foreign vessels that docked in city did not stay long
THE reduction in the arrival of foreign vessels in Bacolod City is being blamed on the 11 percent plunge in the revenue collection of the Philippine Ports Authority-Bacolod covering the third quarter of the year 2004.
Based on PPA-Bacolod's Quarterly Financial Data Report, collections from January to March this year reached only P7.8 million, 11 percent lower than the P8.8 million for the same period last year.
Enrique Fuentebaja, PPA Resource Management Division manager, said the decrease in revenue collection was caused by their low collection on charges for port usage, berthing and wharfage and 10 percent share on arrastre.
Fuentebaja said that berthing charges decreased by 27 percent from more than P878,000 last year to only a little more than P642,000 this year.
For wharfage dues, PPA recorded an actual collection of P4.3 million, also 11 percent lower than the P4.8 million in last year's collection, said Fuentebaja.
He added that they also noted a 10 percent decrease on port usage fees from P1.4 million of last year to the current P1.2 million collection.
"Aside from that we have also posted 29 percent decrease on collection on the PPA's 10 percent share on arrastre," he said, adding that they had an actual collection of more than P432,000, lower than last year's P612,000.
"The decrease on the number of foreign vessels docking in the city apparently gave us low collection," said Fuentebaja.
He further said foreign vessels that docked in the city did not stay long in the Bacolod City port.
Fuentebaja said though that they are optimistic that PPA will achieve its target collection of P37 million for this year.
