Candoni, Mpadilla named areas of concern By Claudine C. Dumalag
POLICE in Negros consider the towns of Moises Padilla and Candoni as election areas of concern, said Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras, Negros Occidental police director.
Ponteras also said the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office will continue to monitor the cities of Himamaylan, Cadiz, and especially Escalante for any political rivalry during the election period.
"Monitoring still continues for the possibility that the each party just laid low for a while," said Ponteras.
He added that because of what happened recently in Moises Padilla involving two Municipal Council members who were threatened by 15 fully armed men believed to be members of the New People's Army, they will prioritize the town for their monitoring because of the series of sightings of armed groups.
The police and Army are now conducting a probe on the matter, said Ponteras. The victims were identified as SB Members Humphrey Hechanova and Tutie Muchuelas.
Initial investigation disclosed that the victims were heading for a visit in the remote area of Sitio Tobobong, Quintin Remo, when 15 unidentified fully armed NPAs wearing civilian clothes blocked them.
Reports disclosed that the suspects asked the victims to pay them an access fee while pointing their firearms at them.
The suspects took the cellular phones of both victims in lieu of cash.
However, 1Lt. Charlie Banaag, 11th Infantry Battalion spokesman, disclosed that they believe that the culprits are the same group who abducted and killed a charcoal maker, Salvador Largardo, of Barangay Makagahay also in the town.
Banaag revealed that the group was led by a certain Edgar Sanico, alias "Tatanong."
