Knights shock Eagles
* Final game on Monday, April 12, at 3:30 p.m. between CSA-B and USLS to be preceded by SJHS and SJI at 2 p.m. for third place
THE law of averages caught up with the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod and St. Joseph's High School derailed the Eaglets, 95-84, last Saturday in the semifinal round of the 12th Panasonic Cup-Your Basketball Athletic Club 14-Under tournament at the Montevista Arena.
University of St. La Salle breezed past undermanned St. Joseph's Institute, 70-54, to take the first final slot. Eleven of the 13 Baby Stingers fielded in by coach Troy Sarabia scored as the Falcons could only retaliate through Reinz Mendoza's 27 and Alvin Dionela's 15 points.
Coach Nene Lapore's 10-game winning streak came to a halt Saturday as the Knights of Monching Macquiling allowed star Eaglet Leeward Lobaton his 42 points but limited the rest. Only Patrick Junno Villamea gave scoring support with 14.
SJHS had another chance Sunday but the Nikkie-sponsored squad survived, 89-87, as time expired while a Knight was on his way for the lying count with 3 seconds left off a tip off from CSA-B's frontcourt. San Agustin led 27-15 in the first quarter and 45-41 at half.
The Eaglets squandered a 13 point lead with 2 minutes left as they allowed three-pointers from the Knights who lost its key players on fouls mostly in the last quarter.
Both squads squandered so many points in the free throw line that could have made the outcome differently.
League organizer Bing Soyao, commissioner Melvin Baclay and YBAC president Jun Ballesteros have set the final game on Monday, April 12 at the same venue.
Game time is 3:30 p.m. between the CSA-B and USLS to be preceded by SJHS and SJI at 2 p.m. for third place.
Prizes and other awards will be given to individual players and members of the mythical team between games and after the championship.
