* NCR bets proved they're the contingent to beat, especially in swimming events
* Defending champion and host Western Visayas is only at seventh place with dismal 2-2-5 tally
POWERHOUSE National Capital Region widened the gap in its title-grab campaign in the ongoing Ched National Palaro being played in separate venues in Bacolod City.
NCR is now safe up in the leader ladder with 24-21-17 gold-silver-bronze medal output while defending champion and host Western Visayas is only at seventh place at a dismal 2-2-5 tally.
The NCR bets proved they're the contingent to beat, especially in swimming events held Monday at the Panaad Olympic Swimming pool in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City.
NCR's Erlando James Abilo topped the 400-meter freestyle heat with a 4:46.78 mark, 13.62 seconds short of the record set by Xyrus Alcantara, also of NCR, in 1997.
Comrade Rafael Carlo Arabejo came in second ending in a .13 second short off Abilo, 4:46.91. Trailing for the bronze was Carlo Roger Vincent Jayme of Region 6 with a 4:47.66 mark, .88 second short from Abilos' record.
Finishing fourth to seventh place were Zaldi Orong of Region 5 ending with 5:02.85, Eric Litonuia of Region 6, 5:06.11; Ruben Suerte of Region 7, 5:09.34 and Romy Saladin of Region 11, 5:28.92, respectively.
Jethro Asis, also of NCR, clinched the gold in the men's 200-meter backstroke with a 2:23.37 mark, 4.37 seconds way off the previous record made by Carlo Luis Manotok, also of NCR, last 1997, 2:21.85.
Region 4’s Emmanuel Herrera trailed behind for the silver, 3.93 seconds short of Asis mark, 2:27.30. NCR's Jeremy Galang swam 2:29.00 to capture the bronze.
Ending in the fourth to seventh place were, Kim Charles Castro of Region 3, 2:30.07; June Rey Larena of Region 6,2:38.53; Felomino Kipte of Region 4-B, 2:40.51 and Sean Mark Rose of Region 7, 2:45.97, respectively.
Topping the 800-meter freestyle heat for the women's division was Larissa Ann Ang of Region 7 with a 10:43.87 mark, 8.84 seconds short from the previous record made by Majonie Palumbarit of NCR in 1998, 10:35.03. NCR's Isah Jane Sueno captured the silver with a 10:57.56 mark and Region 4’s Astrud Valdez clinched the bronze with an 11:42.68 mark.
Trailing for the fourth to seventh places were Region 6's Veronica Paloma, 11:49.45; Ariane Bandivad of Region 10, 12:10.67; Kristine de la Cruz of NCR, 12:22.53 and Madonna Ramirez of Region 3, 12:30.13, respectively.
Myrna Alap of Region 1 clinched the 200-meter backstroke with a 2:47.13 mark, 3.13 seconds off the previous record set by Jennifer Dayrit in 1997, 2:44.0.
NCR's Frances Sapinosa was .81 seconds close to Alap (2:27.94) and has to settle for the silver. Region 7s Loudes Diones trailed in for third and captured the bronze with a 2:48.71 mark.
Trailing for the fourth to seventh places were Marielo Coderis of Region 5, 2:51.66; Ana Paula Berenger of NCR, 2:55.9; Anne Gaile Darunday of Region 9, 2:56.53 and Karen Abordo of Region 4-A, 2:57.22, respectively.
