NTU jins books 1-3-1 medal haul By Jerome S. Galunan, Jr.
NEGROS Taekwondo Union (NTU) Tigers mainstay Miguel Ruiz from the University of St. La Salle grabbed the top honor in the finweight division to book the team's lone gold of the just-concluded Petron New Face of the Year Taekwondo Championships held over the weekend at the Ninoy Aquino Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Likewise, three-time Junior National Champion Pauline Reyes of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, Talisaynon Andy Perdegueros and Kirstine Chua of St. Scholastica's Academy finished silver in their respective weight categories.
NTU head coach Jim Jim Chua disclosed that Reyes lost to Genelyn Decatus via a 1-point setback in the final round.
Chua, however, said that 14-year-old Reyes will see action in the forthcoming World Juniors Championship to be held in Seoul, Korea on June 12-24, 2004.
Reyes' stint in Korea will be bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Taekwondo Association.
On the other hand, Ruper Iwayan dropped to bronze medal after losing in the Bantamweight Junior Men's division.
Six NTU jins joined the competition, including Luke Mark Fuentecha who has also shown gist in his category.
"Their participation in these events will open greater opportunities for these young jins to expose themselves in higher and more competitive tournaments," said Chua.
