Tuesday, August 03, 2004 2 eaglets found, turned over to DENR By Christine Mae A. Pelayo
TWO Brahminy Kite eaglets fell from one of the tallest pine trees in the hinterlands of Brgy. Inawasan, Pamplona, Negros Oriental.
Troopers from the Army's 542nd Army Engineering Battalion in Tanjay found the injured eaglets while they were conducting foot patrol operations in the area.
Col. Alexis Tamondong, 542nd engineering construction battalion commander, said they found the eaglets with injuries on their wings last May yet.
The troopers took care of the eaglets for two months before they turned them over to the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office Monday.
"The army took good care of the eaglets and we made sure that they are in good condition before we turned them over to the province," said Tamondong.
Livino Duran, PENRO head, said the species used to dwell near the coastal area but because their habitat was damaged, they sought home in the forest.
Duran said they will house the eaglets at the Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation Inc. (NFEFI) for proper treatment.
The NFEFI is a rescue center for endangered species.
"When the eaglets are strong enough, they will be set free to the wild. As of this time, they are not yet in good condition," said Duran.
Also present during the turnover of the eaglets were Gov. Joseph Mara¤on, Vice-Gov. Isidro Zayco, Maj. Gulliver Seņires, spokesman of the 303rd Infantry Brigade and PENRO personnel.
