Mayor arrives from Taiwan
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

MAYOR Evelio Leonardia arrived from Keelung City, Taiwan Thursday.

Leonardia said Keelung officials led by Mayor Ssu Tsai Li vowed to give assistance to Bacolod through Jose Tanso and Andres Valencia, Bacolod's adopted son and president of the Bacolod Tay Tung High School Board of Trustees, respectively.

The mayor, however, was not certain yet on what particular assistance Keelung City will give to Bacolod.

He said he presented the city's problems on garbage collection and the worsening traffic condition.

But Leonardia hoped that when Keelung officials arrive in Bacolod during the MassKara Festival next month they could give final assurance on the assistance they could give.

Keelung said Leonardia has been helpful to Bacolod since 1997 after a sisterhood pact was signed between the two cities.

Among the Keelung assistance given to Bacolod are ambulances and motorcycles used by the traffic policemen.

Aside from possible additional assistance, the mayor also revealed that Keelung City's tourism officer vowed to help boost tourism exchanges between Keelung and Bacolod.

Keelung, dubbed as the "Port City" of Taiwan, has 310,000 people that has an annual budget of $500,000 a year.

It's one of Taiwan's progressive cities next to Taipei in terms of tourism and investment.

Leonardia clarified his four-day Taiwan travel was personal and no money from the city was involved.

There, the mayor said, he attended the 150 year-old Summer Festival of Keelung meant to honor their ancestors' help to the new generations.

Likewise, Leonardia said his visit paved the way for the revival of the good relationship between Bacolod and Keelung.

"Ever since, Bacolod and Keelung have an active relationship as sister cities," said Leonardia.

The mayor disclosed that Philippine Ambassador to Taiwan Edgardo Espinosa had accepted his invitation to come, visit and enjoy the forthcoming MassKara festivities.
