Shortage of cement in NegOcc foreseen By Clara Mae Hortelano
CEMENT prices in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, may increase this month with the impending shortage of cement supply in the country.
Trade and industry development specialist Eva Ariza of the Department of Trade and Industry-Negros Occidental said they are closely monitoring the prices of cement as well as other basic commodities.
Prices of canned milk, Ariza said, slightly increased in September this year, particularly that of Alaska Milk Corporation.
Based on the DTI's comparative report on the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities, the prevailing price of Alaska canned powdered milk reached P35.55, higher than its P31.85 price in August.
She said the company's current cost of production, raw material and packaging cost also increased.
The shortage of tin plates also caused the cost of canned milk to rise.
Tin plates is the major raw material for canned products. In 2002, Ariza said prices of tin plates range only at P1.75 per can, whereas this year it reached P3 per can.
"This also explains that in July to August of this year prices of sardines and other canned products increased," she said.
Currently, Ariza added the price of tin plates per metric ton reached $1,000, higher than its $480 per metric ton in 2002.
On the other hand, prices of basic commodities such as coffee, laundry soap, detergent bar, candles, bread and iodize salt remained stable in September, said Ariza.
Prices of prime commodities such as flour, instant noodles and construction materials such as construction nails, G.I. sheets, steel bars, steel wires, electrical supplies, incandescent bulb, incandescent tube, starter and plywood also did not increase, DTI added.
