Hubby of child killer seeks help for wife
By Claudine C. Dumalag

"I CAN'T believe it," said teary-eyed Lito Colendres who appeared dazed by the fate of their 11-month daughter who was stabbed to death by his wife.

Colendres, 33, said he went home around 12 noon to take his lunch the other day but was greeted by her daughter crying blood oozing from her body while being carried by a certain "Franklin" and his "kumpare" outside their house.

The father said he panicked when his friend handed his 11-month-old daughter to him.

Together, they took a tricycle and brought the infant to the nearest hospital in Himamaylan.

"Baby Girl" suffered four fatal stab wounds on her chest and abdomen.

Investigation disclosed that the wife, Imelda, 34, stabbed the baby inside their house in Hda. Ballesteros, Barangay Caradio-an, Himamaylan.

Due to lack of medical equipment, the Himamaylan District Hospital referred the child for treatment in Bacolod City.

The child died on the way to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Hospital.

Lito said his wife dared him to kill her too, saying she wants to be with their child in heaven.

He said his wife was suffering from a nervous breakdown several months after she gave birth to their child.

He further claimed that perhaps, his wife could no longer bear the poverty they are into.

Lito is now seeking the assistance of the Department of Welfare and Development in Himamaylan to help his wife undergo psychiatric treatment.

A native of Himamaylan, Lito works as a "tapasero" or hacienda worker in their village while Imelda, from Surigao, was a plain housewife. The couple got married only last year.

Asked if he would file parricide charges against his wife, Lito said he would not. "I pity her," he said.

He also revealed his wife had earlier threatened to kill their child.

The first time, she struck the victim's head with a water pipe several times.
Imelda was placed under the custody of Lito's parents in Himamaylan.
