* Those who will be handpicked by the screening committee composed mostly of qualified volleyball coaches in the country will have the chance to play for the national team for next year's biennial games
* Homegrown talents include Michelle Laborte, Cecille Tabuena, Ma. Theresa de la Rosa and Amy Divinagracia
ONE hundred sixty spikers joined the national volleyball try-outs of the Philippine Amateur Volleyball Association last week held at the Philsports Arena in Makati City.
PAVA president and concurrent University of St. La Salle (Bacolod) sports director Roger Banzuela said of the aspirants, 100 were men smashers while 60 were female spikers.
Banzuela said those who will be handpicked by the screening committee composed mostly of qualified volleyball coaches in the country will have the chance to play for the national team that will see action in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in November next year.
Banzuela told Sun.Star Bacolod he had submitted the preparation report to the Asian Volleyball Confederation for the preliminary assessment of volleyball games venue for the SEA Games.
Among the potential venues are the USLS Coliseum proposed to be the hub for the men and women's indoor volleyball while the USLS beach volley court for the men and women's beach volleyball events.
Banzuela said he had yet to receive word from the Bacolod Southeast Asian Games Committee to ascertain the venue of volleyball events.
He disclosed having read reports that the Bacolod Arts and Youth Center and the Reclamation Area were also considered as venue for indoor and beach volleyball events, respectively.
As to the national try-outs, Banzuela said his former wards stood out from the rest of those who joined.
He said former USLS varsity players Michelle Laborte and Cecille Tabuena as well as Ma. Theresa de la Rosa and Amy Divinagracia showed outstanding performance in the try-outs.
"Two or three from this batch will surely end up in the national team. Tabuena is currently in the national pool but I guess Laborte will be a great middle blocker for the national team," he said.
Banzuela also noted another Ilonggo standout Janlee Patrona whom he said has been wooed by the association for three years.
"Patrona is from Iloilo but is studying now at St. Benilde. He is now 24 years old and stands 5'9 1/2". He will be a great setter for the team," he said.
Most of those who joined the try-outs were from the Armed Forces, he said.
Banzuela further said they have two teams for the men and women's divisions, one for long term status and the other for short term.
The short term players will be fielded in next year's SEA Games while the long term players will be composed of players aged 17-and-under who will be fielded for the 2007 Seag.
