No comment, sugar administration chief on ouster call By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan
SUGAR Regulatory Administrator James Ledesma refused to comment on the call of sugar planters in northern Negros Occidental for him to resign.
One of his confidantes, however, told Sun.Star Bacolod, the SRA chief does not want to dignify the statement of Lawyer Alejandro Al Acuña, president of the Negros del Norte Planters Association, Inc. calling for his immediate resignation.
Acuña in a press statement said Ledesma was "inutile" in addressing the sugar woes that resulted to the over-supply of smuggled sugar in the domestic market.
This also caused the plunge of sugar millgate prices from P900 to P741 per lkg. "Ledesma did nothing to solve the unabated sugar smuggling," said Acuña.
Governor Joseph Marañon who also sought the resignation of Ledesma early last year begged off to comment on the call aired by the planters.
The governor said he will study first the issue before issuing any comment. As of presstime, only the Confederation of Sugar Planters (Confed) expressed support to Ledesma.
In their press statement, Confed stressed Ledesma is still capable to administer the SRA.
