'NegOcc to have new provincial director soon'
By Avelyn Z. Agudon

KALIBO, Aklan -- As he promised, Philippine National Police Director General Edgardo Aglipay said Negros Occidental will soon have a new provincial police director.

Aglipay, who arrived here Sunday following the carnage that involved six police officers and a 10-year-old girl, told Sun.Star Bacolod the PNP is still looking for a post for acting Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office director Supt. Mark Edison Belarma, so they could detail someone as his replacement.

Chief Supt. George Aliño, police regional director for Western Visayas, said they could not just replace Belarma without a specific assignment because of his "excellent performance."

"We could not just place a 'performer' in a floating status," Aliño said.

He added as soon as Belarma has a new assignment, Negros Occidental will have a new police director.

Aliño commended Belarma's performance, specifically on the campaign against illegal activities.

Governor Joseph Marañon has been clamoring against Aliño's inaction on his request to replace Belarma.

He had tagged as a "misfortune" the fact that the province still has no new police director.

He said Aliño's promise to furnish him a list of candidates is yet to materialize.

Earlier, two names floated as the possible replacement of Belarma.

These are Senior Supt. Charles Calima and Senior Supt. Mario Avenido, former Bacolod City Police Office director.
