Alleged wife-slayer dies in prison By Claudine C. Dumalag
A SEPTUAGENARIAN detained for killing his wife last year was found dead inside the Cadiz City police station detention Tuesday allegedly due to prolonged starvation.
Supt. Mark Edison Belarma, acting director of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, said Bernardo Tomabine, 71, of Cadiz was found dead at 6 a.m. two days ago by the jailguard on duty.
He was found lying on his bed lifeless.
The victim was charged with parricide for killing his own wife, 65-year-old Virginia, last November inside their house in Sitio Sool, Cadiz.
Police said Tomabine suffered from nervous breakdown.
Reports disclosed Tomabine refused to eat much after he was arrested for killing his wife.
Chief Insp. Edgardo Ordaniel, police chief of Cadiz, ruled out the possibility of a foul play as indicated in the result of an autopsy examination on Tomabine's body a few hours after the detainee was found dead.
"According to our city health officer, Tomabine was suffering from severe malnutrition, depression and paranoid disorder," he said.
He also said the parricide case against Tomabine is automatically closed. The remains of Tomabine were claimed by his children Tuesday.
