Durano wants Negros to be golf capital of the world By Avelyn Z. Agudon
TALISAY CITY -- Because of Negros Occidental's frequent hosting of golf tournaments, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano is eyeing the possibility of making the province the country's golf capital.
Durano, who was one of the resource speakers Wednesday of the University of St. La Salle's Second Negros Congress, said local and foreign golf enthusiasts are one big market that the province could cater to.
He said in some foreign countries, one could play golf only if he is an exclusive member of a golf club.
Durano said about 50 million tourists arrive in Spain every year but only few of them play golf.
He further said Negros Occidental is a good place to play golf because of the abundance of plain lands, which are also cheap to be developed.
He hoped tourists will soon flock to the province with the construction of an airport of international standard in Silay City.
Durano further said the project is his "vision" for Negros with the help of the local government units and landowners.
Airport
Durano met Wednesday with Governor Joseph Marañon and Vice - Governor Isidro Zayco.
Marañon presented to Durano the province's plan to re-open an airport which was used by the Construction Development Corporation in Basay, Negros Oriental as part of an effort to boost the tourism industry in the 6th District, where diving areas, specifically in Sipalay City, Cauayan and Hinobaan are located.
Support for Mambukal
Durano, on the other hand, released P500,000 as part of the P5 million support which former Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon promised for the development of the Mambukal Mountain Resort.
Durano said P2 million was released last year and the remaining P2.5 million will be released within this year to complete the P5 million which Gordon earlier gave to develop the resort.
