Hockey invades city By Fernelle C. Rodriguez
HOCKEY may soon find its way in Bacolod City, said Philippine Hockey Federation president and businessman Charles Lim.
Lim said his group is making necessary arrangements with the University of St. La Salle Physical Education department to help in the information dissemination.
"We have brought our materials at La Salle and spoke to the Physical Education teachers to introduce the sport in their curriculum," said Lim.
He further said they have made efforts to educate Filipinos about the event which he says is much like football.
"If you know football well enough, you will not be alienated with hockey. They are very much the same in terms of team composition and certain other details," he said, adding that he is also a big fan of football.
Lim further said they have formed and organized school-based teams in Manila as well as in Cebu and held competitions to arouse the people's interest in the sport.
He also said his group is in the process of applying for membership with the Philippine Olympic Committee to become one of the many National Sports Associations affiliated with the agency.
In the world of hockey, he said, five teams in the World's Top 10 come from Asia, namely, Pakistan, India, Korea, Malaysia and China.
"I don't see why the Filipinos couldn't make it in the list. But it will not happen yet this year but maybe in the next three years we will see how the Philippines will fare."
Lim was in Bacolod City last Tuesday to promote the Sports Tourism Forum set on February 18 at the Casino Filipino Hotel.
Top sports and tourism leaders in the Philippines headed by PhilSOC chair Roberto Pagdanganan, Philippine Convention and Visitors' Bureau deputy executive director Cynthia Carion, Cebu Visitors' Convention Bureau chairman Patrick Gregorio as well as IMG Philippine managing director Princess Galura will be speaking about topics relevant to sports tourism and sports marketing.
Lim further said that he is glad that Bacolod will play host to the men's football event in the coming Southeast Asian Games slated this year.
The city will also play host to indoor and beach volleyball, weightlifting and boxing.
