Aikidokas get scholarships
THE Pax Christi Pilipinas granted scholarships to five students of the martial art Aikido last January 23.
The partnership of the peace movement and the martial art is based on a shared philosophy of active non-violence.
The Christi granted scholarships for membership in the Kyokan Dojo, Bacolod, a member of Aikido Philippines.
The five young women from Villa Angela Subdivision who were granted scholarships last Sunday practice Aikido for the past several months with Stella Fuentes from Kyokan Dojo Bacolod.
The grantees are Jenalyn Dalmacio, Joany Gabriel, Ana Carita Magbanua, Jane Franco and Rodesa Jayawon.
Aikido is the way (Ai) to use your energy (Ki) to create harmony (Do) between conflicting parties.
The Aikido student is called Aikidoka, who focus on neutralizing destructive energies but not the opponent.
An experienced Aikidoka is not only able to defend himself but also comes out unhurt.
He or she guides the opponent through the movement so that this person does not get injured.
This opens space for a "scarless" reconciliation.
This is why Aikido is called the non-violent martial art or The Art of Peace.
The peace movement Pax Christi promotes Aikido as an approach to conflict and a way to learn nonviolent action.
