Restaurant views roasted chicken as threat to food business
By Clara Mae Hortelano

THE executives of Max's Restaurant Franchising Department, Incorporated viewed the inasal (roasted chicken) business in the city as their biggest competitor in the food business.

At the grand opening of Max's Chicken Bacolod Robinsons Branch Friday, James Fuentebella, board member of the company-owned Max's Chicken Incorporated, said they had a long debate whether or not to bring Max Chicken in Bacolod, as it is known as "Land of Chicken Inasal" in the country.

He added they were apprehensive before in bringing Max's Chicken in the city considering the high preference of Bacoleños to chicken inasal.

The price, Fuentebella added, was also a factor that chicken inasal has lower price.

He said they strategically invaded the Visayas region in the early 1990s when they opened their Cebu branch.

"Since then it has always been in our plans to open a branch either in Iloilo or Bacolod where there is high preference to chicken inasal," he said.

Fuentebella added that when they opened their Iloilo branch, it made them realize that maybe Bacolod is also ready for Max's Chicken.

Ria Tapodoc, assistant managing director of Philband Food Corporation--the franchise owner of Max's Restaurant Bacolod--said Bacoleños have been receptive to their product when they opened last January.

"The business is doing good so far," she said. "We always have a big influx of customers dining and some are suggesting for expansion of the place considering that we have only a small area here," she said.

Tapodoc added that in three months time they are hoping to expand their store to accommodate the growing number of customers.

"We can now say that Max's Chicken will survive in Bacolod," said Tapodoc.

Max's Restaurant Bacolod is the 99th branch among the 101 branches nationwide, said Ronaldo Linao, Franchising Department manager of Max's Franchising, Incorporated.
