Caging teams heat up for Monico Cup weekend games
By Fernelle C. Rodriguez

DRIBBLERS from Barangay 2 squared off with Barangay 14 at 8 a.m. Friday in the ongoing Monico Cup Inter-Barangay 19-Under Basketball Tournament.

The games were played at Barangay 35 gym. The Singcang-Airport team faced Barangay 39 at 9 a.m in the same division.

Clashing in the 26-Under division are Barangays 8 and Tangub at 1:30 p.m. while Barangay 21 will face Barangay 24 at 3 p.m.

To deliver a sure-fire caging stance will be the dribblers from Barangays 7 and 9 at 4:30 p.m.

The games will then be played once again at the Bacolod Arts Youth and Sports Center Sunday.

Making a mark in the 19-U competition are the Montevista team and Barangay 23 at 8 a.m. while Barangay Tangub will face Barangay 23 at 9:30 a.m.

To clash in the 26-Under competition are Singcang-Airport and Vista Alegre at 1:30 p.m.

Barangay 2 will compete with Barangay Banago at 3 p.m. while Montevista will dribble against Barangay 27 at 4:30 p.m.

The event was organized by Nicky Puentevella, son of Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella.

The younger Puentevella said that players who will be named to the mythical team of the age-group tournament would form the nucleus of Team Bacolod which will be competing in various invitational tournaments.

The champion teams in both divisions will be awarded P25,000 each, while the second and third placers will be given P15,000 and P10,000, respectively.

The tournament, a component of the grassroots sports program of Representative Monico Puentevella, has seen the emergence of up-and-coming varsity talents suiting up for the different collegiate teams.

Entered in the boys' 19-Under tournament are Barangays Estefania, 2, 8, 10, 12, 14, 19, 30, 36, 39, 43, Banago, Bata, Cabug, Estefania, Granada, Montevista, Pahanocoy, Punta-Taytay, Singcang-Airport, Sum-ag, Tangub and Villamonte.

Challenging Barangay 8 for the Under-26 crown are Barangays 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, 21, 24, 25, 36, 37, 39, Banago, Bata, Estefania, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Montevista, Pahanocoy, Tangub, Vista Alegre and Singcang-Airport.
