Barangay Tangub surges in Monico Cup
By Fernelle C. Rodriguez

AFTER their elder counterparts gained ground by beating the defending champion in the 26-Under division, so did the Barangay Tangub 19-Under cagers who gave their ultimate performance to lead their division in the ongoing 2005 Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament.

The Barangay Tangub 19-Under team secured their third victory Sunday as they defeated the much-favored Barangay Singcang-Airport players, 83-78.

Also dusting the hardcourt in Barangay Pahanocoy was the Barangay 2 squad that defeated Barangay 30, 70-54.

The Tangub dribblers advance in the win-loss tally by posting a 3-0 card, leading the pack in Bracket B.

They secured their first victory last April 10 at the hardcourt of the Bacolod Arts, Youth and Sports Center where they faced the Barangay 23 dribblers.

The Tangub cagers overpowered Barangay 23, 74-62. They then brushed dribbling prowess with the equally talented Barangay Bata cagers last April 14. Both teams did not frustrate the crowd as both rallied to an intense caging stance.

However, as all sports events must end, only one has to caress victory. Tangub won by a mere fraction against Barangay Bata, 103-95.

Barangay Granada forwarded another victory in last week's game after securing their second win by defeating the Barangay Pta. Tay Tay dribblers last April
12 in a game held at the Barangay 35 Gym, 77-65.

Also gaining a victory that day was the Villamonte cagers who edged out the Barangay 19 team, 88-46.

The Barangay Granada team first earned victory in Bracket D by defeating Barangay Sum-ag last April 7 when the games were held in Barangay 39 Gym.

The Barangay 19 dribblers, on the other hand, defeated Barangay 36 on Thursday, 86-79.

On Saturday, two teams secured 10-point advances, namely, Barangay 23 team who defeated Barangay 39, 74-64 while Pahanocoy edged out Barangay 36, 75-65.

The tournament, a component of the grassroots sports program of Rep. Monico Puentevella, has seen the emergence of up-and-coming varsity talents suiting up for the different collegiate teams.

The champion teams in both divisions will be awarded P25,000 each, while the second and third placers will be given P15,000 and P10,000, respectively.

Entered in the boys' 19-Under tournament are barangays Estefania, 2, 8, 10, 12, 14, 19, 30, 36, 39, 43, Banago, Bata, Cabug, Estefania, Granada, Montevista, Pahanocoy, Punta-Taytay, Singcang-Airport, Sum-ag, Tangub and Villamonte.

Challenging Barangay 8 for the Under-26 crown are barangays 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, 21, 24, 25, 36, 37, 39, Banago, Bata, Estefania, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Montevista, Pahanocoy, Tangub, Vista Alegre and Singcang-Airport.
