City gears up for Freedom Day

Bacolod City prepares for its participation in the 107th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2005. This year's theme is "Bayan Ko, Mahal Ko."

"Celebrating our Independence Day is a deeply entrenched tradition which has become synonymous with our being Filipinos," said Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

In Executive Order Number 04, Leonardia appointed Councilor Al Victor Espino as chairman of the Independence Day celebration.

Different committees were also created to undertake activities related to the event.

The steering committees are: peace and order committee with Senior Superintendent Vicente Ponteras as chairman; parade committee with Superintendent Edmundo Sanicas, chairman; decoration committee with Architect Lemuel Reynaldo, chairman; physical arrangement committee spearheaded by Jasmin Gallo; usherettes committee with Perlette Caceres as chairperson; invitation committee with Thelma Imutan, chairperson; food committee headed by Ramona Capusan; media committee with Agnes Lira-Jundos as chairperson; and the program committee to be headed by Imogene Kana-an.

Espino, who will spearhead the ceremony said, "We celebrate Independence Day in memory of our patriots for the freedom that we have acquired because of them. We need to acknowledge their sacrifices in order for us to be strong in facing different challenges."

Independence Day is being celebrated annually in remembrance of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1998.
