Clear public plaza: police director By Ritzy Robles Malo-oy
SENIOR Superintendent Vicente Ponteras, director of the Bacolod City Police Office, Thursday challenged the new commander of Police Precinct 1 to rid the public plaza of the so-called "plaza girls."
Ponteras said Senior Inspector Edel Jose Manzano should respond to the plights of these "night girls," a campaign that was launched by Manzano's predecessor, Chief Inspector Calixto Mabugat who is currently pursuing further schooling.
The police precinct has identical number of personnel that Manzano can make use of to fight various forms of criminality at the area of responsibility. Most street crimes or petty offenses like bag slashing and snatching occur at Manzano's area of jurisdiction.
Ponteras said he ordered Manzano to continue what Mabugat had started specifically in clearing the place of bad elements.
Before Mabugat took over the reign of the police precinct, the plaza has become a haven of criminality and prostitution.
Among Manzano's assignment is to prevent the occurrence of the "salisi" type of estafa operations that include the case of 49-year-old Alexander Prudente, of Santa Ana Street, Eroreco Subdivision, Bacolod.
Prudente said he fell prey to "salisi" suspects at the Downtown Lodge on Cuadra Street. The victim said one Joan, alleged prostitute at the plaza took the P39,000 cash from his pocket. This happened while they were inside a room of the lodge, early Thursday morning.
Through the rogue's gallery of Police Precinct 1, the suspect was later identified as Joan Billocora, 29, of Relocation Site, Fortune Town, Barangay Estefania. Reports said the suspect has another companion, An-an Villahermosa.
