People's council eyed after Arroyo ouster
By Joseph Alvin A. Treyes

* There is consolidation of forces with other militant and oppositionist groups nationwide that would eventually call for the ouster of Arroyo
* The People's Council will temporarily govern until someone is chosen to replace Arroyo if the ouster call triumphs

A PEOPLE'S council to replace the leadership of President Macapagal-Arroyo?

This was the idea advanced by militant and cause-oriented groups led by Bayan-Negros and women's group Gabriela Thursday.

Bayan secretary-general Felipe Gelle reiterated their stand against Arroyo who they said has no moral ascendancy to rule the country as she had failed miserably.

Gelle cited Gabriela-Negros secretary-general Rina Amacio accused the Arroyo administration for its poor delivery of basic services to the masses that resulted in, among others, the ballooning foreign debt services.

Amacio and Gelle said there has been possible consolidation of forces with other militant and oppositionist groups nationwide that would eventually call for the ouster of Arroyo.

"Our communication lines are open to unity with those calling for her (Arroyo's) resignation," Amacio said.

Amacio added they have lost confidence on the manner Arroyo has been addressing the concerns of the people.

But Amacio said they would take precautionary measures once any political oppositionist group would join the call for Arroyo's resignation.

"We don't want to mingle political interest in this initiative," said Amacio stressing they won't compromise the formation of a consultative body against those who were lusting after power.

No to rule of succession

Gelle said if ever Arroyo will be ousted, they wouldn't buy the idea of having Vice President Noli de Castro replace her.

"What can we expect from him anyway?" he said.

De Castro, a former television host of ABS-CBN's Magandang Gabi Bayan and one time member of the Senate has no good track record to show, Gelle said.

The People's Council will temporarily govern until someone is chosen to replace Arroyo if the ouster call would triumph.

If ever talks will take place on the ouster move against Arroyo, another "People's Power" is in the offing, quipped Amacio.

When asked if there is anyone in the House of Representatives and Senate who could be a better replacement for Arroyo, Amacio and Gelle said they have found none.

"If anyone can reverse what we are experiencing today then he or she is the one fit for the job," he said.
