'Text the City' soon in Bacolod
By Roberto L. Bacasong

CEBU CITY -- Globe Telecom, one of the country's largest telecommunication providers, proposed the Value Added Services to be called as "Text the City" featuring vital information of Bacolod City.

In a press conference at the Laguna Place Cafe in Ayala Business Center here, Globe Handyphone officials told members of the Bacolod City Hall Press Corps that the new service is like a mobile assistant that will help domestic and foreign tourists who wanted to know all about Bacolod.

Buena Paz Montero, accounting manager for VAS, said the proposed project offers updated relevant information of Bacolod.

"It will provide 24/7 assistance to Negrenses and Bacolodnons as well as to tourists in just a few seconds," Montero said.

The content of the project will give directories of resorts, churches, airline companies, among others.

"The proposed project will help the texters update the daily schedules of airlines, busses and even the sessions of the City Council," added Montero.

She further said the project would also help the subscribers browse the entertainment section for movie guides and gigs schedules.

"Globe Telecom also vowed to provide text advisory such as the traffic situation and weather forecast," said Montero.

She added that subscribers can also text the mayor, the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, emergency units of ambulance assistance, Patrol 117 and other emergency services.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he was impressed by the presentation proposed by Globe. He said the project would surely help the tourism industry of the city.

"We are in the right direction and I believe in the capability of the city in handling tourism projects for Negros Occidental and Bacolod," said Leonardia.

Leonardia was also accompanied by Bacolod City Tourism Officer Imogene Kana-an and Councilors Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairman of the committee on women and gender, and Homer Bais, chairman of the committee on tourism.

Leonardia, however, said the City Government and City Council members have yet to study the proposal of Globe.

Batapa-Sigue, on the other hand, said she is planning to invite Globe representatives to present the proposal to the City Council.

If the project will materialize, Montero said, "Fifteen percent of the total cost of the texts will go to the City Government."

Montero stressed that Globe Marketing Support will shoulder all marketing materials in the promotion of the service.

"It will facilitate the raffle promos during launching or first two months of its function," said Montero.

Montero was accompanied by Jerome Yntig, corporate external affairs head; Manuel Gordon, legal counsel; Ramon Escaño and Rina Tacardon, corporate marketing officers; Patrick Gloria, business manager for Cebu Ayala business center; and Sharon Ciocon, business for Bacolod.

The "Text the City" service is now operational in Metro Manila areas and Baguio City while Bacolod, Cebu, Iloilo, among others are next to benefit from this service.
