City to conduct simulation, fire drills By Roberto L Bacasong
TO IMPROVE the preparedness skills of every Bacolodnon, the Bacolod City Disaster Coordinating Council (BCDCC) will hold simulation drills on July 28 at the West Negros College.
Cesar J. Villa, BCDCC executive officer, said Patrol 117 and other rescue groups in the city will teach the students and Bacolodnons how to equip themselves when earthquake and fire incidents happen.
"This is a simultaneous exercise nationwide to be covered by the media and to be documented and evaluated by the critic-representatives of both regional and national disaster coordinating councils," Villa said.
Villa advised Bacolodnons that in case of typhoons, they should stay indoors and keep calm; monitor television and radio reports; secure their homes; trim trees near dwellings; keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.
He added that if the house is in a flood-prone area, the residents should go to the nearest designated evacuation center.
Villa said every household should have a reserved flashlight and handy radio, with fresh batteries.
Villa said that every Bacolodnon should avoid low-lying areas, riverbanks, creeks and coastal areas, slopes, cliffs and foothills. Rain can trigger landslides, rockslides or mudslides.
In case of volcanic eruptions, residents living around an erupting volcano are faced with volcanic hazards that may ensure; these include pyroclastic flows, ashfalls and lahars.
Hazard maps that show areas likely to be affected by any of these hazards are available from proper authorities prior to eruption. Follow all advisories and warnings, as these can save your lives.
