Public warned vs ATM syndicate
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

THE Bankers Club of Negros Occidental warned Tuesday the public against organized syndicate employing new modus operandi victimizing automatic teller machine (ATM) card holders.

Report said this "high profile" team of organized criminals install an equipment at legitimate bank ATM to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN, too.

Cindy Baliguat, BCNO secretary said this kind of modus operandi already existed abroad.

However, it was not known yet if it already exists in Manila or other provinces since no one has come out to report such case yet, said Baliguat.

However, she said some of their members from both Manila and abroad have already alerted them regarding this.

Baliguat said based on the information she received, the syndicate simply installs a wireless gadget in a car and then park the car in front of ATM machines where holders usually fall in line to withdraw cash.

Aside from the car, the syndicate also installs another "skimmer" equipment mounted to the front of the normal ATM cleverly disguised to look like a normal ATM equipment.

Then the equipment reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminal sitting in a nearby car.

Added to that, Baliguat said the syndicate also put up a wireless camera disguised also to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

Then the syndicate copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands of pesos from many accounts in a very short time directly from the ATM machine.

"We hope that ATM card holders should be aware by this modus operandi by looking side by side of the ATM machine before doing a transaction," Baliguat added.
