Churchman 'impregnates' girl?

A church elder in Moises Padilla town in central Negros Occidental was accused of allegedly making a 17-year-old teen pregnant.

The alleged victim, whose name is being withheld by Sun.Star Bacolod, together with her mother, went to the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) office to ask for assistance in their case Friday morning.

The victim's mother said they are set to file a case of "qualified seduction" against a 34-year-old church elder (name withheld) and a resident of Barangay Udyong, Moises Padilla.

The mother alleged that suspect has been giving money and cellphone to her daughter, which may have prompted the minor to submit to his demands.

The mother said they've tried to settle the matter last July 24, 2005 at the barangay level where they've agreed that the suspect will support the child being carried by her daughter and would give P50,000 in advance as support fund.

But the suspect allegedly fled before he could sign the written agreement.

The victim was a youth secretary in their parochial church and assisted the suspect in his obligation.

The victim, on the other hand, said their relationship started February 2003.

The victim added that the suspect earlier told her that he will marry her even if their relationship would lead to her becoming pregnant.

The suspect, however, is married to a woman in Bago City and who is also believed to be carrying her child.

The mother of the victim said if only the suspect have just followed the agreement and support the child, then they would not have to resort to reporting the incident.

Vangie La Guardia of the CHR said they will file the case as soon as possible.

La Guardia however said the case could not be lifted into a higher crime because the two have had an intimate relationship.
