Singaporeans not Vietnamese, ganged up Indon national
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

SORRY, I was wrong.

So said Bacolod City Police director Senior Supt. Pedro Merced when he made a public apology Monday over several AM radio stations in the city.

The city police director clarified an earlier report the police had disclosed that it were Vietnamese football players who "mauled" an alleged Indonesian "spy' at the Paglaum Sports Complex last Sunday morning.

It turned out, however, that the offending parties were Singaporean players and not the Vietnamese.

"Yes, I was wrong because I relied on the report of Police Precinct 1 commander Inspector Jose Edel Manzano that was later submitted to Insp. Harold Tuzon of the BCPO's Operations Branch," explained Merced.

Merced vowed not to commit the same mistake again.

Coaches and officials of the Vietnam team were reportedly shocked of Monday's report implicating them in the mauling incident.

Benjie Alimon, Bacolod SEA Games Organizing Committee (BaSoc) coordinator for team Vietnam, said that Vietnamese officials were really, really "disgusted" by the report.

But Merced said, "My apology to the Vietnam contingents. It won't be repeated again. Next time, I'll be careful in issuing statements."
