Province to give Negrense boxing winners cash rewards
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

FOR their exemplary performance in the recently-concluded 23rd Southeast Asian Games, the Negrense and Bacoleño boxers who won medals in their respective bouts were given cash incentives yesterday by the Provincial Government.

Governor Joseph Marañon gave P10,000 each to Joan Tipon and Juanito Magliquian of Talisay City and Mitchel Martinez of Bago City for winning gold medals over the weekend at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.

Silver medalists Mark Jason Melligen of Bacolod City, Joegen Ladon and Reynaldo Galido of Bago City also received P5,000 each.

Meanwhile, bronze medalist Warlito Parreñas of Cadiz City was also given P2,000.

Marañon stressed that giving incentives to the Negrense and Bacoleño boxers is one way of giving recognition to their hardwork and undaunted skills.

It is also a way, he said, of at least compensating the hardships that they underwent while preparing for the games.

He added that the Filipino boxers have fought hard to give honor to the country.

Bago City Mayor Janet Torres likewise made her own gesture by giving cash incentives to their Bagoeño boxers, namely, Martinez, who got an additional P10,000, while Ladon and Galido were given P5,000 each.

Tipon bagged the gold after defeating Thailand's Tantong Klongjan, 27-14, in the men's bantanweight; Magliquian after defeating Za Myo Min of Myanmar, 22-3, in the men's pinweight and Martinez pocketed the gold by defeating Thailand's Rafree Kruake, 28-10 in the Women's lightweight division.

Silver medalist Melligen, on the other hand, suffered defeat from the hands of Thai Non Boojumnong, 14-24, in Men's welterweight.

The same fate was experienced by Ladon who lost to Worapoj Pethkhum of Thailand, 3-13, in the men's featherweight while Galido bowed to Thai boxer Suriya Prasathinphimai, 4-11, in a referee stopped decision by retirement.
