A TEENAGER was accused of raping a six-year-old at a cane field in Silay City last month.

The boy, a 16-year-old, blamed the x-rated movies he saw on his neighbors' TV sets for his crime.

He now faces a complaint for rape before the Silay City Prosecutor's Office after the victim complained to her parents and pointed to him as the culprit.

Silay City Prosecutor Ma. Lorraine Atotobo is now looking into the complaint.

When asked, the teener, who is now with the Department of Social Services and Development (DSWD), admitted raping the girl in a nearby sugarcane field last Nov. 28.

He told Silay City Women and Children and Protection Desk Officer PO2 Nanette Laurelia that he only did it as he wanted to copy the acts in the x-rated films he saw on his neighbors' TV.

This prompted Laurelia, together with Mayor Carlo Gamban, to ask the Barangay Captain to regulate the showing of x-rated films in the barangay.

Meanwhile, Media Advocates on Reproductive Health and Empowerment (MARHE) president Ma. Ester Espina said the incident is a reminder of the influence of media among the youth.

MARHE is a group of media practitioners advocating for reproductive health issues, as well as violence against women and children.

"I would encourage the parents now to really regulate what their children are watching and guide them accordingly," Espina said, adding that access to technology is very easy nowadays.

But she said that what worries her most is the growing trend of sexual offenders getting younger.

"I think the government units should take active part now in reaching out and educating our youth," she said.

But she stressed that while it is but right to give justice to the victim, society must also look into the rehabilitation of these young offenders.
