Water firm offers communal faucets to Handumanan residents
By Roberto L. Bacasong

BACOLOD City Water District (Baciwa) general manager Vicente Petierre assured that they are doing something about the water shortage complaint of the residents of Barangay Handumanan.

The residents earlier complained to Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia that they are having a water shortage because of the operation of Baciwa's pumping station 7 at the NGO Village, which is located within the barangay.

Petierre, in an interview, said the board of directors already met last Monday to discuss the problem.

He has also sent his technical committee to conduct a survey in the affected areas Tuesday.

Mayor Leonardia, in a separate interview, also assured that the city is doing something to give a fair solution to the problem.

He said he met with the residents and tackled the problem with the presence of Petierre.

For her part, City Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, said she is set to hold a committee hearing with the residents Thursday.

The councilor said she will weigh the statements of both parties before submitting her report to the mayor.

Petierre said the technical team has yet to report the results of their inspection.

He explained that the team is tasked to repair the water pumps, which were the cause of the inadequate water supply.

He added that they will put up two communal faucets in the affected areas. But he stressed that the communal faucets are not for free.

"The Handumanan councilmen will pay the water firm in an installment basis," he said.

The residents have earlier complained that their public faucets or pumps are no longer working. They blamed Baciwa for the problem, hinting that the water firm's pumping station may have affected the groundwater supply in their barangay.

Petierre also scored the Barangay Opposition against Massive Baciwa Abuses for reportedly airing statements against Baciwa.

"We all have the permits from the national government when we put up the pumping stations here," said Petierre.

Pumping Station 7 supplies water to Barangays Handumanan, Pahanocoy, Cabug, Sum-ag, Punta Taytay, Tangub, Alijis, Singcang-Airport, Taculing and 39.

"If we will stop the operation of our pumping station, about 30,000 residents from Bacolod would be affected," he added.
