Council debates on new City Hall
By Roberto L. Bacasong

THE members of the City Council argued Wednesday about the letter of Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

The mayor has requested five representatives from the City Council to be members of the joint executive-legislative committee for the new City Hall set on Dec. 21.

Leonardia, in his letter dated Dec. 11, has cited that the five representatives from the council will help to study, evaluate, assess and recommend for a possible site and construction of a new City Hall.

In his separate letter dated Dec. 6, the mayor has furnished the City Council a letter from Rafael Lizares Jr., chairman of the Luxur Realty and Development Corp.,the owner and operator of the Bacolod Convention Plaza Hotel, which is selling the first class hotel for P285 million to the City of Bacolod.

City Councilor Lyndon Caña, has suggested to the city council that the City should look for interested property owners who would like to donate their property to the City as venue for the new City Hall.

Councilor Anne Marie Palermo, meanwhile, said that Mayor Leonardia should write the council, justifying the need for a new City Hall.

Councilor Dindo Ramos on his part argued that it's high time for the members of the council to listen to the local chief executive about the proposal of having a new City Hall.

"It is clear on his (Leonardia's) letter that he is requesting our (council members) presence to the joint executive-legislative caucus," said Ramos.

He also suggested that the members of the Council should raise their issues to the mayor during the meeting.

Vice Mayor Renecito Novero questioned why only five members of the council is needed to attend the joint caucus.

Councilor Espino, on his part, affirms the need to acquire a new City Hall. He added, "If Talisay City and other cities in the province can do it why can't Bacolod?"

"We are all elected officials of the city. I would like the proposed City Hall to be established on my term. We really don't know if in the next election we will be elected again. I feel that it is time that we should consider the option of the mayor," said Espino.
