Fojas asks Marañon to probe Geagoni's disappearance By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan
TIRED of answering and explaining that the army has nothing to do with the disappearance of labor organizer, Perseus Geagoni, military officials in Negros island are pushing for a fact-finding investigation to clear the issue once and for all.
In his December 23 letter to Governor Joseph Marañon, Philippine Army 303rd Infantry Brigade Commander Jogy Leo Fojas said the accusations are only aimed at discrediting the military here.
Fojas, who was recently promoted to a Brigadier General, said these accusations remain "unfounded" and "baseless" and are designed only to malign the good image of the military and the police establishments in Negros.
He has asked the governor to convene the newly-organized Negros Occidental Peace and Order Council Fact-Finding Committee (NOPPOCFFC) to conduct a fact-finding
investigation on the controversial disappearance of Geagoni.
"At least, this way, NOPPOCFFC could probably determine, the person or persons involved and the reasons for Geagoni's disappearance," added Fojas.
Geagoni's relatives, the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers (NFSW) and other militant groups in Negros have accused the military and the police units of having a hand in the disappearance of the labor organizer.
Geagoni, 42, a resident of Zone 14, Talisay City was last seen on December 5. He sought permission from his wife to go out of their residence and was not seen since.
Nieva, Geagoni's wife, said in a press conference last December 12 that her husband wanted to get something from the NFSW office along Verbena street in Bacolod City.
But after 9 p.m. on December 5, she said, she became nervous and got worried because of her husband's failure to go home.
She believes that her husband's disappearance has something to do with his job as labor organizer of NFWS.
Yet, Fojas categorically refuted the claim of Geagoni's wife regarding her husband's work.
Quoting an intelligence report of the army, Fojas disclosed that Geagoni was not a labor organizer but a leader of the urban hitmen belonging to the sparrow unit of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA).
Such disclosure, however, was nixed by militant groups particularly the NFSW and KARAPATAN-Negros tagging also the military as expert on propagandas.
Fojas, however, countered by calling the NFSW and KARAPATAN-Negros as "liar, liar and liar."
