2 Maranaos face drug transport rap
By Jonathan P. Pilla

ESCALANTE police will charge drug transporting against the two Maranaos who were arrested Wednesday night for carrying with them 43 grams of shabu.

The materials taken from the suspects were tested positive for Methamphetamine Hydrochloride or commonly known as shabu.

Charged were Mangotawar Halim, 42, and Umpa Abdulmalik, 28, both native of Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur and temporarily residing at San Juan Bonifacio, Barangay 5, San Carlos City.

The two were caught at a checkpoint in Sitio Bangkal, Barangay Jonobjonob in Escalante City conducted by the members of the Escalante Police and the 602nd Regional Mobile Group.

The confiscated material is estimated to have a market value of P85,000.

Taken from Halim were four sachets of suspected shabu weighing 24 grams while five sachets, weighing 19 grams, were also taken from Abdulmalik's possession.

The two are now detained at the Escalante City Police Office.

Escalante Police chief Senior Inspector Mateo Maguate, on the other hand, said they still have to arrest another person that is also with the duo dealing in the same operation.

The third person is said to be the wife of Halim, which the suspect has denied.

Earlier, they even denied owning the materials taken.

Meanwhile, Provincial Police Director Charles Calima Jr. is set to coordinate with the Sangguniang Kabataan for a series of drug symposium in line with the Noppo's drug awareness program, which they have started last year.

Calima said they will gather student leaders of different schools in the province and intensify their campaign against the proliferation of illegal drugs.

They will also talk with teens who are members of fraternities and orient them with the effects of using drugs.
