P2M worth of shabu seized in W. Visayas By Genalin D. Ducay
THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Regional Office in Western Visayas indicate in a report that last year's drug trafficking activities yielded more than P2 million worth of illegal drugs.
Their campaign covers the entire Western Visayas Region.
Although there are no confirmed drug laboratories in the region, drug smuggling has found its way to the key cities of the region, the report said.
The region's strategic location made it vulnerable to illegal traders nationwide, it added.
The cities of Iloilo, Bacolod, and the provinces of Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Capiz, Aklan, and Antique have posed serious concerns on drug trafficking and abuse.
Methamphetamine Hydrochloride or known as "Shabu" remained to be the most used drug in the region due to its hallucinating and lasting effect.
Majority of arrested violators of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act used or possessed "shabu".
On the street, shabu is sold for P3,500 to 4,000 per gram. Ketamine, however, has been reported negative in the region.
Volume and value of illegal drugs seized and recovered from January to December 2005 were 649.53 grams of shabu worth P2,273,355; 4447.35 gram of marijuana worth P222,367.50; four pieces marijuana seedling worth P400; .73 gram of cocaine worth 3,650 and two ecstasy tablet worth P2,000.
The enforcement of R.A. 9165 resulted to the arrest of 581 persons from the 461 operations conducted last year by the PDEA, 140 of which were in a joint operation with the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Out of 426 pushers, PDEA apprehended 62 persons and 364 persons arrested in cooperation with the PNP.
A total of 423 drug cases were filed in court from January to December last year. Fifty-five of which were filed by the PDEA and 368 by the PNP.
Meanwhile, 3147 drug cases were monitored in the region with 2,894 pending cases, 33 dismissed, 16 acquitted and three convicted cases.
