Naba awaits PSC funding to stage tournaments By Henry C. Villalva
THE Negros Amateur Boxing Association (Naba) is hoping that the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will finally work out in giving assistance to the association for its grassroots development programs.
Naba head, former Bacolod councilor and vice-mayor Juan Ramon 'Monju' Guanzon told Sun.Star that he is hoping that PSC commissioner Negrense Ritchie Garcia and Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella will help them in order to mobilize their plans to discover and develop more Negrense amateur pugs.
Guanzon said they were assured by Garcia and Puentevella that they will help secure the needed funds for Naba's programs, particularly the staging of regular boxing tournaments in various towns and cities of the province.
"We got the good news of the possible funding support from PSC thru Commissioner Garcia during the boxing hostilities of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games last December and we are eagerly looking forward to it so we can immediately implement our long-conceived program of tournaments," Guanzon said.
Naba treasurer Vie Tan also said that the boxing ring used during the last SEA Games at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum was already donated to the association.
"We are thankful to Garcia for the ring as well as the gloves that they promised us. But it would be much better if the promised funding support will finally come because we can't implement our program of tournaments if we don't have the funds to run the hostilities," Tan explained.
Guanzon and Tan likewise lamented on the space occupied by the Naba gym at the Bacolod Sports Stadium (formerly Paglaum) has become smaller after the Sea Games.
"We don't have enough space for the new boxing ring that's why we hope Puentevella will be true to his promise to give us more space at the gym so we can accommodate the new boxing ring and train more boxers," Tan reiterated.
Guanzon also said he is looking forward to the formal turn-over to NABA of the
SEA Games boxing ring by the City of Bacolod when the space at the Naba gym has been extended.
The turnover was supposed to happen after the championships of the boxing events of the SEA Games at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum but was aborted following the commotion that happened inside the venue as a result of alleged "biased judging" in the championship matches involving Filipino boxers.(HCV)
