W. Visayas PRISAA short of funds for nat'l event
AT LEAST P1.7 million is needed by the Western Visayas contingent for the national Private Schools Athletic Association meet.
Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) president and Western Visayas PRISAA athletic manager Roger Banzuela told Sun.Star that the delegation will need P615,000 for the transportation alone.
Banzuela met with the Western Visayas PRISAA board members and coaches in Iloilo City Thursday, said the delegation will need at P615,000 for the transportation alone.
The meet, which is to be held on Feb. 6-11 will be staged in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
"We have to spend at least P8,000 per person. With insufficient funds I suggested that we can opt to send a lean delegation if we are not able to find sponsors who are willing to help us out," Banzuela said.
The University of St. La Salle varsity sports director also confirmed they are still having problems with the participation of USLS athletes who are graduating considering that the national PRISAA coincides with La Salle's mid-term exams.
"We're still trying our best to look for solutions to the problem but I told the graduating athletes especially in volleyball to remember that volleyball will still be there after graduation. What's important is for them to be able to graduate," Banzuela explained.
Meanwhile, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos sports moderator Ericson Rios said everything will be discussed in the board meeting Thursday.
The meeting will be held at the University of Iloilo campus, 2:50 p.m.
As to the non-inclusion of men's football in the WV contingent, Rios confirmed that football was not included in the list of events to be participated in by the WVPRisaa. This was also the case in Zamboanga City last year when the WV pocketed the over-all championship.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be the guest of honor and speaker in the opening ceremony of the national meet on Feb. 5 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
It will be the first time that the President will open the sportsfest featuring top athletes from various private tertiary institutions in the country.
Events to be competed are athletics, baseball, basketball, football, softball, volleyball, badminton, chess, taekwondo, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis and sepak takraw.(HCV)
