Education dep't issues closure orders to 30 pre-schools
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

OFFICIALS of the Department of Education (DepEd) here are advising parents to enroll their kids to pre-schools that are accredited by their office since 30 out of the 150 private pre-schools in Bacolod City has no permit, the DepEd revealed Thursday.

Dr. Alodia Elisa, DepEd-Bacolod in-charge of pre-schools, have already given the notice of closure for the early learning institutions.

Elisa, however, refused to name the schools, which were dubbed as "pasaway" (errant).

"We pity the parents who have paid much for the tuition fee of their children who are enrolled in these unaccredited schools," she said.

Elisa said that in case these schools could not comply with the requirements they have set, she would implement the closure of these schools.

Elisa has already been deputized by the DepEd Regional Office in Western Visayas to impose Regional Order No. 03, which is the "Closure of Private Pre- and Elementary Schools Operating without Permit or Recognition from the Department of Education."

The order was recently signed by DepEd Regional Office Director for Western Visayas Victoriano Tirol.

Among the requirements in operating pre-schools include the area must be away or separated from the house of the owners, the building must be conducive for learning, teachers must have education or other related degrees with supplemental subjects on graduate studies and must also have 18 units on early childhood education.

Elisa also said that the tuition fees for the pre-schools must not exceed P25,000 a year or per semester.

She added that although pre-schools are not yet included in the educational ladder in the Philippines, these serve as the basic foundation of every child when he or she goes up to elementary, and so on and so forth.

"But with the latest trending now of high tuition in private pre-schools in the country, the government is contemplating to also incorporate pre-school in the education system in the country," said Elisa.

The proposal though is still under a careful study.
