Negrense cage leaders not in favor of BAP as NSA name By Henry C. Villalva
IT SEEMS that the name Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) is no longer acceptable to many ranking basketball leaders in this part of the country.
That is, if it's going to be used again as the official name of the national sports association (NSA) for the said sport.
This consensus came after Sun.Star Bacolod Thursday asked the opinion of certain Negros basketball officials regarding the possibility that the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) might again be forced to use the name BAP as a compromise for some sectors to somehow forge a unified stand on the issue of the country's representation with the FIBA (International Basketball Federation).
Negros Basketball Association (NBA) president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon said he is no longer in favor of retaining the name of BAP because it has already gained a negative connotation and I think it's about time we changed it to something new and something positive.
Referring to the position earlier aired by Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella on the matter, Bascon, a former Western Visayas regional director of BAP, said "I go with Monico's opinion that the name BAP no longer has a good reputation in international basketball and retaining the name might be counter-productive."
"It's just a play of words but we certainly can use some name that doesn't have a bad connotation," Bascon added.
Meanwhile, NBA vice president lawyer William "Hanz" Chua for his part, said "BAP has already lost credibility in international basketball and while we are at trying to make changes for the better we might as well change the name. But l believe we need to put the right people in the NSA because even if we keep on changing the NSA's name if we still retain the same corrupt people to run it the change in the name will mean nothing."
POC president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco earlier told mediamen in Manila the basketball stakeholders may use the name of the 60-year old BAP provided "it cleanses itself by putting in a new set of officers to run the organization."
The POC, led by Cojuangco and Chairman Robert Aventajado with Puentevella as vice-president had earlier forged a memorandum of understanding with the FIBA to come up with a unified basketball body for the country by March 30.
