Negrense pugs off to Aussie slugfest
TWO Negrense amateur boxing standouts have been selected to be part of a lean but mean Philippine boxing contingent slated to compete in the Australian Tri-Nation boxing tournament scheduled February 16 to 18 in Melbourne, Australia.
Bago City native and 1992 Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist Roel Velasco who is currently the head coach of the RP women's boxing team made this announcement Thursday.
The two Negrense pugs are flyweight Warlito Parreñas of Cadiz City and bantamweight Joan Tipon of Talisay City.
Both were members of the RP team who saw action in Bacolod City for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games competed at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.
The other two Filipinos in the Australian tilt are light flyweight Albert Pabila and coach elmer Pamisa, Velasco said.
Tipon, a product of the grassroots development program of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) and a former member of the Negros Occidental High school boxing squad, went on to pocket the gold in his division in the last Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Parreñas, who is more experienced in international competitions, was discovered in 1999 in Bago city during the National Youth Boxing championship organized by Abap. No less than Cuban coach Raul Fernandez Liranza noticed Parreñas's potential and recommended him to the national training pool.
Before last year's Sea Games, Parreñas captured the gold in the Vietnam pre-Sea Games tournament in January 2005 and followed this up with another gold in the TAMMA Cup Championship in Finland in October where he was named "Best Boxer of the Tournament."
"Tipon and Parreñas are two of the most promising Negrense boxers currently in the national team and I won't be surprised if they do well in international tilts in the next two to three years," Velasco said. (HCV)
