City gets award
By Candy S. Genovea

BACOLOD City will be conferred as the Local Government Unit of the Year in the 2005 Apolinario Mabini Awards because of its facilities catering to the needs of the rehabilitation of the differently-abled individuals.

The Apolinario Mabini Award is a search for individuals, groups and agencies that have made outstanding contributions to the wellness and rehabilitation of people with disabilities.

Bacolod City is chosen the best from among the other local government units in the country because of its concern, efforts and outstanding contribution in the rehabilitation of the disabled people in the city.

"Please accept a well-deserved congratulations for your concerted efforts in helping the disabled and for a job well done."

The award will be given to the city through Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia on March 24, the anniversary for the passage of the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons.

Leonardia said some officials of the Philippine Federation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled Inc., which organized this year's Mabini Awards, visited the city earlier to monitor its programs for the wellness of persons with disabilities.

The officials visited the sidewalks and the public plaza among other places here and decided that Bacolod is much better than the other cities in the country.

Leonardia, who received the information last Tuesday from Kate Gordon, vice chairperson of the 2005 Apolinario Mabini Awards Committee, also acknowledge Councilor Ann Marie Palermo for being instrumental for the City to achieve such feat by filing recommendations needed on providing facilities and equipments for persons with disabilities.

The awarding ceremonies will take place with the anniversary celebration of the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons on March 24, 10 a.m. at the Malacanang Palace. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will be the guest of honor and speaker.
