Ariola: Broken vow
By Jose Paolo Ariola
I Still Walk the Line

I SPOKE too soon.

In my previous column entitled "Heroes and Cowboys," I vowed that I won't ever watch this movie about faggot cowboys. Oh well, I broke my vow over the weekend. And how. Something happened that provoked me into seeing this movie, which somehow has made it the current rage in the cinematic world. At the risk of being misconstrued, I'd like to make this clear that although I love to watch movies, I don't profess myself to be a movie critic. And neither is this intended to be a critique of the movie's production aspect. I'd just like to share with our readers the horrible experience I went through in watching the same. So please bear with me.

Arguably, most of us watch movies for entertainment.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Secondly, for whatever moral lesson, if any, we moviegoers may derive from them. Well, I was not at all entertained as I watched "Brokeback Mountain." In fact, I was traumatized.

There are scenes in the movie that made me cringe in my chair as the lead characters essayed their roles as gay lovers with graphic acts of sodomy and osculation.

Oh how I cussed and cursed throughout the movie watching those two "cowboys" emoting in their gay roles. Why it even made me want to puke. But I had to agonize till the end because I wanted to find out what others find laudable in it. In the end, I found nothing enjoyable in the movie. It was horrifying for me instead. As I've written in my previous column, there are things in this world that are just not right. Two men torridly kissing each other or engaging in anal sex (and enjoying it) just ain't right. Yuck and uggggh! No, make that yuck and ugggh x 10,000.

Yet after all is said and done, and if ever there is one conclusion to be made after watching this movie it is that if one is a "straight guy", he will surely not enjoy this movie at all. But if one is a queer, then he'll most likely enjoy every minute of it. Say n'yo?

So that's how the movie "Brokeback Mountain" made me break my vow. On second thought, if ever they intend to make a sequel to this movie, wouldn't the title "Brokevow Mountain" be nice? Oh, brother!

* * * * *

As I've written previously, I used to look up to my cowboy heroes in my younger days. And as if fate would have it, while I first learned to play the guitar way back in my high school days, I was introduced to country and western music. Thus, my fascination with western stuff came to include cowboy apparel like boots and Stetson hats which I wear from time to time to the office or whenever I feel like wearing them.

But there is one drawback in wearing cowboy boots and hat. Now because of this movie, I'm having second thoughts of wearing them lest I be mistaken to be a member of the federation.

I must thank our new editor-in-chief for having spared me some of his time to clarify certain editorial matters. At least, we laid our cards on the table like two sporting men. Now that everything's clarified, we can now move on to dreadful waters. Oh and by the way, thanks for the coffee!
