City spent nothing for barangay assembly
CITY Mayor Evelio Leonardia clarified Monday that the City has not spent a single centavo on the assemblies held in some barangays Saturday.
"We don't have a budget for that," the mayor said.
Leonardia's statement came as a clarification on rumors that some of the local chief executives in the country were given funds by Malacañang to pursue the barangay assemblies, which were allegedly meant to push the approval and support the Charter change (Cha-Cha) efforts.
"I would like also to clarify that I have not given an order to anybody to release any budget for that barangay assembly," he said.
Leonardia stressed that Cha-cha or people's initiative can no longer be detached from the issue of politics.
"My opinion is to leave this matter to the people. Let them decide. Let's not stop other people from exercising their political rights," he said.
As to the legality of the event, Leonardia said, "Let the court determine whether the barangay assembly is legal or not."
He said whatever the outcome of the barangay assembly, he vowed to abide by it as it is the choice of the people, a point that was earlier stressed by Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon.
"Let us not force anyone to conform with the Cha-cha if they don't want to," the Marañon stressed. (EASD)
