3 ex-WNC booters named to RP XI lineup
THREE former football standouts from West Negros College were named recently to the lineup of the RP national men's squad that will see action in the 2006 Asian Challenge Cup qualifying competitions as announced in Manila by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).
The three former WNC booters are goalkeeper Edward Sacapa¤o of Bago City as well as Wilson de la Cruz and Winnie Subere.
Sacapaño was the keeper of the Negros Occidental men's squad who took the PFF National Men's Open crown back in 2001 while both dela Cruz and Subere were members of the WNC bannered RP Under-19 squad who campaigned in a youth invitational tournament in Bangkok, Thailand in 1988.
The team was mentored by brothers Samuel and Rinelle De Oca and managed by Anthony Carlo Agustin, chairman of the WNC Committee on Sports Management and Development.
The PFF failed to invite members of the 2006 PFF National Men's Open champion squad from Negros Occidental bannered by University of St. La Salle standouts to join tryouts for the RP side who will see action in the Asian Cup qualifying event.
Inviting members of the PFF Men's Open champion side is considered an "SOP" based on previous experience. This was earlier confirmed to Sun.Star Bacolod by former RP team coach Freddie Lazarito who mentored the victorious Negros Occidental side in this year's PFF men's open series held in
Iloilo.
Meanwhile, Sun.Star Bacolod was able to confirm from a PFF source that Fil-Britons Philip and James Young husband, members of the RP team who saw action here during the 23rd Southeast Asian Games men's football competition last year have declined playing for the country in the ongoing Asian Cup qualifying series citing prior commitments with their professional ball club in England.
Negrense football leaders have earlier expressed disgust over the non-inclusion of Negros Occidental standouts in the list of possible national team aspirants following Team Negros Occidental's championship victory over National Capital region in the 2006 PFF National Men's finals.
The four Negrenses who took top individual awards in the said tournament were MVP Arnie Pasinabo, best midfielder Jayson Panhay and best goalkeeper Archie Bayquin of University of St. La Salle and best defender Joel Ballo-allo of West Negros College. All four confirmed to Sun Star Bacolod that they did not get invitations to the RP team tryouts conducted in Manila by national team head coach Aris Caslib.(HCV)
